Summer may seem like a time for warm temperatures, picnics, barbecues, and excellent weather, but it’s by no means any easier on your roof. The blistering temperatures and seemingly-endless hours in the sun can stress and damage anything fairly quickly, including the materials on your roof. Therefore, preparation for these summer months is important. Here are three tips to help you get your roof ready for this year’s season of intense sun exposure and brutal heat.
Examine Your Shingles
Frigid temperatures, pelting rain, and pelting from hail can all do some pretty serious damage to your roof. Therefore, when the weather starts to turn warmer, it’s important to get on your roof level and examine your shingles or tiles to check for damage. If you have shingles, look for any curled, warped, cracked, or even missing pieces. These areas are hotspots for damage to the underside of your roof, and can even be made worse when exposed to heat and sunlight for weeks at a time. Damage incurred at these spots can lead to costly major repairs. Before the weather starts getting too hot, schedule a repair service with a Dallas roofer and make sure your roof is protected and in the best possible shape for the upcoming heat.
Inspect Your Skylights
Skylights are a popular way to light homes naturally, reduce electric bills, and provide stunning views of the outdoors. But that being said, skylights are holes in your roof and need to be properly installed and maintained to prevent leaks from developing around them. When you inspect your rooftop, you’ll want to make sure the seal around your skylight is still strong and not cracked in any way. You’ll also want to make sure the window itself, particularly the side facing the top of your roof that is subject to the most water exposure, is clean, clear, and free from any potential damage. While you’re on your roof, it’s also a good idea to use a strong glass cleaner and clean your skylights to remove any dirt, dust, or streaks that could otherwise inhibit your beautiful view.
Check Your Gutters
Now that the rainy season is over, it’s time to check and fix your gutters. Look for any signs of potential damage or blockage that may still be fresh from the last rain. If you have a blockage, your gutter could still be flooded and have standing water. If there are leaks or your gutters are loose, you should be able to spot them rather easily and repair them, including nailing them back to your roof to keep them secure. This is also a good time to clean out your gutters and remove and dirt, dust, or debris that may have built up, reducing the effectiveness of your gutters.
Summer is also a great time to install gutter guards if you do not have them done already. You can purchase gutter guards for a dollar or so per foot from your local hardware store, and the amount of hassle they save you make them well-worth the investment. Once your gutters are cleaned out thoroughly and repaired, install these guards over the top of your gutters. This will allow water to drain through and be carried away properly but keep the leaves, rocks, and other debris from backing them up, eliminating the need to clean them out every year.
